National Service Personnel Are Under-utilised - Prez Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has expressed worry over the massive investments made in national service persons yet their expertise are not being untilised within the governmental ministries and agencies.

President Akufo-Addo added that, considering the investment made in the national service scheme, he expects a great return from the investment but it appears that the investments are futile because little is being gained by government from the people who enroll for national service each passing year.

The president made this assertion while speaking at the launch of the National Service Policy Document held in Accra on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

In view of the president’s assertion, the government has announced that plans are underway to regulate the deployment processes which will promote learning opportunities during the one-year period of serving the nation.

Speaking further, the president added that the government has put together some transformative initiatives which will enhance the National service scheme thereby giving it an elevation.

Adding to the package of the National service policy, President Akufo-Addo stated that there will be a collaboration between the National Service Secretariat and the National Teaching Council to introduce a method and practice of teaching to enhance teaching and learning which will contribute immensely and improve the pupils to teacher ratio in public schools.

He said, “the policy document will implement an MSME accounting programme to help formalise the informal sector and also form specialised partnerships to promote tourism in Ghana through the NSS support programme.”

President Akufo-Addo added by saying that the government will "expand experimental agricultural programmes for national service personnel under the Sekyere Kumawu economy enclave with support from the Ministry of Finance under the Ghana Care Obaatanpa Programme and Agri-Impact Ghana.”

With the issue of redundancy at the government agencies and institutions, President Akufo-Addo mentioned the introduction of a metric application system which will be implemented to improve efficiency and ward off waste and redundancy within the public sector.

With the world becoming smaller due to the technologically advancement and innovations, the government, in the quest to place Ghana on the global market to compete with the world, has mentioned that ICT hubs will be established to provide training for service personnel in IT solutions tailored to meet the needs of communities across Ghana and the world at large.

These interventions mentioned by the President is geared towards the eradication of underutilisation of National service personnel.

“These interventions will solidify the National Service Scheme's position as one of the best in West Africa and the Africa region for deploying service personnel. I urge all stakeholders to support the scheme in achieving its objectives.”

“I am confident that with the implementation of the new policy, the national service scheme will play an even more vital role in shaping the future of our nation and empowering our youth to fulfil their potential.”
