You’re Leading This Nation into Chaos - Speaker Bagbin Rebuked

Former Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan has scolded the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin for rejecting a Supreme Court writ regarding the court’s ruling to stay his declaration of some seats in the Legislative House as vacant.

The Speaker’s order has resulted in confusion within the Members of Parliament in that the Minority is claiming majority position while the Majority members insist not to cede their position.

The Supreme Court stayed the Speaker’s decision asking him to wait until a final determination of the issue, hence expects the Speaker to cancel his decision.

But the Speaker directed the return of the court documents served by bailiffs on the Parliamentary Service, citing constitutional immunity under Article 117 of the 1992 Constitution.

He communicated his dissent through an official letter addressed to the Supreme Court stating, “the attached processes which were left at the Legal Services Office of the Parliamentary Service by three bailiffs of the Court on Wednesday, 16th October 2024, are hereby returned”.

He added; “The Rt. Hon. Speaker has directed the return of the attached processes for your necessary action.”

The Speaker, on the other hand, is requesting the Supreme Court to vacate their ruling.

However, the Supreme Court, in response, has refused the Speaker’s application.

Responding to the Speaker’s posture to the court, Kwamena rebuked Alban Bagbin wondering how he defies the court but wants the same court to grant his demand to vacate their ruling.

Kwamena Duncan further slammed the Speaker saying he is jeopardizing Parliament with his entrenched position.

He noted that the Supreme Court is the country’s “last chance of survival”, hence the Speaker’s behavior is very unacceptable.

“This is a Speaker leading us onto the path of chaos,” he told Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show.
