Joseph Boahen Aidoo, the Chief Executive of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has lauded the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration for bringing what he describes as a remarkable development into the cocoa sector.
The COCOBOD CEO, in an interview on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' morning show, disclosed that the government has instituted programmes and introduced significant initiatives that have revolutionized the sector.
He cited some of the measures installed to improve cocoa farming as the government resourcing the farmers and providing a good producer price for them.
He also revealed that due to the good works of the government and himself, COCOBOD will soon clear all its debt which is a major boost for the sector.
Concluding his submissions, Mr. Boahen Aidoo noted that "regarding the producer price that the farmers have been given currently, it is the highest ever. It is unprecedented".
Cocoa Producer Price
Ghana is the second-largest producer of cocoa in the world with cocoa being a significant contributor to the country's foreign exchange earnings.
The producer price of cocoa for the 2024/2025 cocoa season in Ghana stands at GH¢ 48,000 per tonne representing 45% increase from the previous price which was GH¢ 132 per 64kg bag.
The new price was announced by the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC) and aimed to improve the welfare of cocoa farmers, discourage smuggling and other vices that would ruin the cocoa fortunes of Ghana.
